The funeral Mass for President John F. Kennedy was held in Saint Matthew's Cathedral in Washington, D.C. on November 25, 1963, followed by the President's burial in Arlington National Cemetery.
Saint Matthew's Cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington. The church was originally established in 1840 near the United States Capitol, and construction began on its present location not far from the White House in 1893 with the first Mass celebrated on June 2, 1895. In 1939 the church was designated as a Cathedral when the Archdiocese of Washington was established.
