Description
This photograph was taken inside, and on the floor underneath, the towering "Birth of the American Flag" sculpture in the 15-story high atrium of the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Washington, D.C. It was made by sculptor Rodney Carroll for the recently built Marriott, which opened in 2014 and is now the city's largest hotel with nearly 1,200 rooms.
On a plaque in the hotel's lobby is the following statement about "Birth of the American Flag":
"The flag of the United States of America is the image of the American people. With pride and passion we fly, wave and wrap ourselves in the flag. From the celebration of the birth of our nation on the 4th of July to the draped coffins honoring the sacrifices of our heroes who protect our freedom and liberty, the flag is there. It is the image that bonds the people of our great country."
"Elements of stars and stripes have been, as a fabric, sewn together becoming Old Glory in 1776. At the same time, the people of this country bonded together with shared ideals and virtues to become the United States of America, as important now as it was then. The flag stirs the spirit of a nation, the souls of the people. The flag is a shield against tyranny, a cloak to keep us safe."
"The ideals of liberty belong to every American. Together we celebrate the birth of our nation, and the birth of the American Flag."
