Description
The Library of Congress, also known as the National Library of the United States, is located in Washington, D.C. across the street from the Capitol, and next to the Supreme Court. The Library of Congress was first built in 1800 but was destroyed by fire in the War of 1812. Today, nearly 200 years later, it is the largest library in the world by shelf space and number of books. Although it is open to the public, only Members of Congress, Supreme Court justices and other high-ranking government officials may check out books. This photograph is an interior shot of the Great Hall of the Library, which is located just inside the building's main entrance.
