Description
The Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC has an extensive and very broad collection of American art that covers all regions and art movements found in the United States. Its home is one of the oldest government buildings in the city, the former United States Patent Office (the grand hall on the building's top floor is where President Abraham Lincoln's second inaugural ball was held).
The building also houses the National Portrait Gallery which has a wing devoted entirely to Presidents of the United States, and portraits of all, including some of First Ladies. There are portraits of most (if not all) of the Founding Fathers, many by Gilbert Stuart. Stuart's Lansdowne Portrait of George Washington is considered the most famous painting of the first president and is on prominent display at the National Portrait Gallery.
The museum is located a few blocks from the National Mall between 7th and 9th Streets, and F and G Streets, NW, and opened 11:30 am to 7:00 pm daily. There is no admission fee.
