Description
This is the dome of the National Gallery of Art (NGA) in Washington, DC. The NGA was established in 1937 when the very wealthy banker, industrialist and philanthropist Andrew W. Mellon donated his substantial art collection to create a national museum of art , which was approved by the United States Congress and operates under the auspices of the Federal government. At the time of Mellon's very large contribution of art, several other prominent people pitched in with their own art work to help establish the new gallery, and today, after eighty years, the NGA has the largest art collection in America. The NGA is on Constitution Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue between 3rd and 9th Streets (the avenues intersect at the mid-point of the gallery’s main building, where the dome and columns in this photograph are).
Since the NGA is located on the National Mall where there are several large Smithsonian museums, it was my assumption for decades that the gallery was part of the Smithsonian. It was a surprise to learn otherwise a few years ago, and I make this statement so that other photographers do not mistakenly write things about their images, or even give their photographs a title (which I recently saw) that perpetuates the belief that the NGA is a Smithsonian museum.
