Description
The "Smithsonian Castle" is the original building of the Smithsonian Institution, which was established in 1846 in Washington, D.C., and has become the world's largest museum and research complex, with 19 museums, nine research centers and more than 140 affiliate museums around the world. The red sandstone "Castle" with its towers and spires was completed in 1855. Today the original building, which is on the National Mall, is surrounded by many of the Smithsonian's newer museums. It houses the institution's administrative offices, some of its first artifacts, and the crypt of James Smithson, the founder of the Smithsonian.
