Description
This is the National Archives of the United States in Washington, DC, as seen from the corner of Constitution Avenue and 7th Street. The National Archives is the record keeper of the United States. The inscription high above the columns on the right side of the photograph states that "THIS BUILDING HOLDS IN TRUST THE RECORDS OF OUR NATIONAL LIFE AND SYMBOLIZES OUR FAITH IN THE PERMANENCY OF OUR NATIONAL INSTITUTIONS." In the building's main chamber, known as the Rotunda for the Charters of Freedom, are three formative documents of the United States and its government: the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. It also has an original version of the 1297 Magna Carta. Other documents of great historical significance are the Louisiana Purchase Treaty and the Emancipation Proclamation, and collections of photography and other historically and culturally significant American artifacts. The large, classically-styled building opened in 1937. It was designed by renowned American architect John Russell Pope. (Pope's other Washington buildings includes the Jefferson Memorial, National Gallery of Art, National City Christian Church, and the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry Temple, also known as House of the Temple.) The National Archives is open to the public, and its famous documents are a popular attraction for people visiting our nation's capital.
